The Sealed Scroll of Revelation 5 | Lesson #4 Study Notes

Why Jesus Alone Is Worthy to Open the Seals

Key passage: Revelation 5:1–14 | King James Version
Main truth: The Lamb redeems us to God by His blood. We receive acceptance with God
through Christ by faith, and His grace produces a changed life.

1 The Sealed Scroll and the Worthy Lamb

John sees a scroll in God’s right hand, sealed with seven seals. He weeps because no one is
found worthy to open it. An elder announces the victorious Lion; John sees a Lamb standing as
it had been slain. Jesus is the crucified and risen King.
Read: Revelation 5:1–7.

2 Redeemed by His Blood

Heaven declares the Lamb worthy because He was slain and redeemed people to God by His
blood. Redemption restores our relationship with God and reaches people from every nation.
Christ’s sacrifice provides what our money and achievements cannot purchase.
Read: Revelation 5:9, 12; 1 Peter 1:18–19.

3 Accepted Through Christ by Faith

All have sinned and need God’s grace. To be justified is to be declared righteous before God.
He forgives and accepts the believer on the basis of Christ’s redeeming work. Faith receives
this gift and depends on His righteousness.
Read: Romans 3:23–24; 2 Corinthians 5:21.

4 Peace with God and a Way Back After Failure

Justification by faith brings peace with God through Jesus. Our confidence rests on Him, even
when our feelings change. When we sin, we can confess honestly and receive His promised
forgiveness and cleansing. Repentance turns us toward God and away from sin.
Read: Romans 5:1; 1 John 1:9.

5 Grace Bears Fruit in Obedience

Salvation is God’s gift, received by grace through faith. Good works are the fruit of His saving
work. As branches depend on the vine, we depend on Jesus for spiritual growth and strength
to obey. His grace leads to honesty, reconciliation, forgiveness, and service.
Read: Ephesians 2:8–10; John 15:5.

My Response This Week

Bring one need to Jesus: a sin to confess, a promise to trust, or a relationship to repair.
Choose one specific step of obedience, depending on His strength rather than trying to earn
His acceptance.
Remember: Christ’s sacrifice is the foundation of salvation. Faith receives His gift. Obedience
grows from His grace. Worthy is the Lamb—my confidence is in Him.

Looking Ahead

Next, we will study the four horsemen as the Lamb opens the seals. Keep your attention on
the Redeemer who opens the scroll.
